About Mills on the air (MOTA)
This years event takes place on
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th May 2025
Brief History
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (S.P.A.B) runs a Mills Celebration event every year, on or around the second weekend in May.
The Denby Dale Amateur Radio Club (Formerly Denby Dale Amateur Radio Society) have organised the Mills on the Air event since 1996.
An article by Jasmine G4KFP of how the event came into being can be found here
Without their hard work over the years the event would not have taken place and become a staple in many clubs radio events calendars.
So a huge thank you to the team at the former Denby Dale Radio Society for their hard work and for entrusting us to take the event into the future.
The event itself is not run as a contest. The aim is to bring together amateur radio operators and clubs to promote the hobby, whilst helping preserve some of the wonderful heritage of our Windmills and Watermills. However we will welcome any Tidal Mills, Treadle Mills or Horse Mills (with a wide variation of types within those!). There is a wealth of historic sites that the UK has to offer. It would be lovely to see a wide variety this year!
If you would like to take part in the event please fill out the form "Register for MOTA" with the following information:
Event Station Call Sign, Contact, Club Name, Club Website, Mill Name, Mill Website, Maidenhead Locator, WAB Square
PLEASE NOTE
All clubs / groups or indiviuals must have permission from the mill, their own Public Liability Insurance for the event and conduct a risk assesment.
NHARG take no responsibility for the running of your station.
Awards Scheme
We will continue to run the award scheme, as has previously been conducted. There will however be a slight change and that is;
if you can please donate to either S.P.A.B. or you local Windmill / Watermill to help with the upkeep of their site. The Donation is just that, a donation and is not contingent on you recieving your awards.
The award scheme is open to any amateur operator that works any of the registered stations for the period of the active event.
To qualify for the award work 10+ individual registered stations (does not depend on band or mode) but, there can be no repeat station either from other days or other bands / modes.
The following from your log will be rquired:
Station worked, Date, Time, Band & Mode
Please send you log file in text, excel or .adif file types to 2019m0osl@gmail.com
Your award will be sent in pdf format shortly after latest June of that year.
SWL Award
To qualify for a SWL award you will need to log 10+ contacts that the registered MOTA station(s) was in QSO with, including the Date, Time, Band & Mode.
When applying for this award it would be useful if you can give your receiving location so that we can pass this information back to the station(s) to allow them to have a reception report.
Please send you log file in text, excel or .adif file types to 2019m0osl@gmail.com
Your award will be sent in pdf format shortly after latest June of that year.
